Improving Community Literacy in the West Island

Community Literacy: Community Reads! mini-libraries, local workshops, support in the adult education centres, and family literacy initiatives!

Community literacy - mini-libraries

This year we were able to resume community programs in person and continue developing programs with partner organizations. We offered programs in the local adult education centres, established three Community Reads! mini-libraries, offered local workshops, and started our family literacy initiatives. Improving community literacy makes the West Island stronger.

Adult Education Centres:

Our volunteers facilitated weekly conversation sessions at two adult ed centres: Place Cartier and West Island Career Centre.

Tutors developed weekly themes to inspire conversation and help build confidence. Sessions at Place Cartier took place onsite and in person while sessions at the West Island Career Centre were held online.

Community Reads! Libraries:

We established three Community Reads! libraries at partner organizations.

Libraries were curated based on the specific needs and interests of the patrons within each organization. We implemented a cloud-based library management app to facilitate lending, tracking, and usage.

Community Workshops

We partnered with L’Équipe Entreprise to develop a 4-part digital literacy workshop. Tutors developed tailored sessions based on the specific needs of the patrons that covered topics from getting to know the computer, to social media and to office software, among others.

Family Literacy

Our first family literacy project was in partnership with the West Island Mission in the Summer of 2022, where we distributed 324 books to local families that use the Mission’s food bank. And we will be back again this year with even more books! Click here for a list of fun family activities!
